    Title:
Khmer Stone Hardstone Head of the Male Divinity, Angkor Wat 'Baphuon' style. Cambodia. 11/12th C.
Temple Relic. Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. Museum Quality!
    Overview:
A superb Khmer fragmented head, probably that of Vishnu, hand-carved in traditional 'Baphuon' style, beautifully executed from a solid block of dense hardstone, from a temple precinct near the Kulen Mountains of Cambodia. The sculpture retains excellent clarity, rendered with distinct facial features, powerful downcast expression, and ornate formalism, measuring 9.50 inches (24.13cm) in height, without the museum mount.
    Description:
A masculine divinity image, hand-carved in relief, portraying a softly contoured face harmonious within the volume of the head, depicting a serene contemplative expression, reflecting humility and compassion, with incised features of the face. The eyebrows are arched in relief and join in the middle above a prominent nose, a well shaped mouth with wide lips, and elongated earlobes. The head is covered by a smooth dome-shaped ushnisha topped by a floral ornament finial.
    Data Observation:
Excellent condition, with minor degradation of the surface, with dings, dents, and pitting being a natural part of the stones patina. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item.
The sculpture has a dry, un-altered surface, with a superb patina, penetrating the surface of the stone in wonderful mottled variations of hues and colours, from the environmental conditions in which it was maintained.
