    Title:
Standing Figure of a Male Deity. Khmer 'Khleang' Style. 10/11th C. Cambodia.
    Description:
A superb 10 to 11th century hand-carved Khmer Sandstone Male Deity Figure, stylistically and iconographically executed in traditional 'Khleang' style, from Khmer mythology. The figure is presented in its unrepaired condition as acquired, elegantly modeled from a solid block of sandstone, measuring 46.07 inches (117.0cm) in height w/ stand.
The deity is masterfully modeled in realistic human form, standing in a frontal posture with both arms and legs broken, wearing a short stylized vertical striated sampot hung low about the midriff, with the navel visible, secured by a decorative belt passing around his hips, fashioned with neatly incised pocket folds on the left thigh, and an ornate dagger on the right thigh, complimented by an ornate central panel elegantly draped in stylish fish-tail folds.  At the reverse is a similar motif, tied at the back in a butterfly notch.

The face appears indigenous, typically Khmer, with a serene expression, almond-shaped eyes, connected eyebrows above a well-shaped broad nose, smiling lips, long pendulous earlobe. The head is covered by a cylindrical hat enclosed by an interconnected diadem, tied at the back in a knot, with vertical striated braids of hair woven down to the nap of the neck.
    XXX
Originally chiseled as a full figured image, the fragmented portion is an exquisite example, unaltered, with a well weathered and worn surface, with a naturally aged patina of molted variation grayish-brown hues throughout.  The surface showing minor degradation, and clear evidence of selective erosion, that developes  after extensive exposure to the elements over time.
NOTE: SOLD AS PRESENTED WITH STAND.
    Data Observation:
Excellent Condition, with the exception of small surface abrasions. Severed arms and limbs are typically found in images of this type, having multiple breaks from the burial environment in which they were unearthed, which does not detract from the beauty of the piece in anyway, as displayed. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item.
