Sacred Temple Phra Leela Sukhothai Walking Buddha. 19th Century Bronze.
    Description:
An extremely rare and sacred statue of a Walking Buddha, from a Temple precinct located in the Sukhothai province of north central Thailand. Relics of this type were usually placed on a temple altar or placed in a blind arcade, and used during ceremonial rites.
    Image:
Bronze Buddhist Shrine image rendered in very fine details, depicting a historical Sakyamuni  Sukhothai Buddha walking on a round single lotus base, showing his royal gracefulness and exalted profile, while walking in meditation.

The image is modeled with dramatically curved contours, having well defined broad shoulders, the chest inflated, and narrow waist, portrayed in a rhythmic motion with the left hand raised in the ‘Vitarka’ mudra, a teaching gesture, dressed in traditional monks attire, a long loose fitted sanghati robe covering the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder and breast uncovered, with the end sash draped just below his navel and marked with a fish-tail notch.  His oval face has a serene gentle expression, defined by downcast eyes, arched eyebrows above a prominent nose, a smiling mouth, and his head covered in small hair curls, surmounted by a domed ushnisha and flame finial.
    Data Observation:
Cast in the lost wax method the bronze surface has a nicely aged dark brown patina, with worn highlighted areas from being handled and rubbed by Buddhist monks during religious ceremonies. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item.
