    Description

A civilized ancient Khmer sculpture 'Head of Shiva' 15/16th century, the indic deity of creation, commonly known as Shiva, who was prominent from Phnom Bok Cambodia, Khmer civilisation 'Bakheng Style' 10th century. The name of the god can be interpreted as meaning "One who purifies everyone by the utterance of His name" or the Pure One. However, even though He represents destruction, He is viewed as a positive force (The Destroyer of Evil).
This sculpture has an expression of divinity, with full bow shaped mouth, moustache, broad nose, double outlined almond shaped eyes with incised pupils, a continuous finely ridged brow, and large ears with pendulous lobes, Shiva’s crown is intricate and finely incised with a top boarder of tongues and a latticed foliate band centered by the beaded borders. It is elaborately knotted in the back, above the nape of the neck. The vertical spiral tresses of hair are arranged into a tiered conical usnisa compose of carved bands of lotus petals. The usnisa is surmounted by a bud shaped cintamani. The deity's head-covering is of Indian origin, consisting of a cylindrical Mitre-type hat (the attribute of Vishnu) symbolizing the deity's exalted status. The mitre comes all the way down to the nap of the neck, and wraps his unadorned elongated earlobes, framing the face.
