Massive Head Fragment Temple Relic. Museum Quality!
Title:
Khmer Sandstone Temple Guardian 'Dvarapala' Lion, Angkor Wat 'Preah Ko' Style. Cambodia 11/12th C.
Overview:
x
Khmer's massive towering Temples were typically enclosed by concentric series of walls, strategically decorated with stone landings staged with statues of Buddhist lions, mythical guardian figures, usually depicted in pairs, which flanked the main approach to the sanctuary of most Khmer structures. They were also placed along stairways, corridors, chambers, and terraces, representing royalty, strength, and courage, and were believed to have protective benefits in warding off evil forces and intrusion.
Description:
x
A powerfully enormous Khmer Mythical Buddhist Lion Head fragment, exquisitely carved in traditional Preah Ko' style from a temple precinct of northern Cambodia - depicting a monsterous head, poised in a ridged stance, with large upper jaw, lined by large carniverous teeth, projecting fangs carved in the round, and strong lower jaw. The face with an aggressive attitude, displays a frounded forehead centered by an ornate floral design, bulging eyes, arched eyebrows connected above a broad nose, and gaping mouth and projecting tongue. The lions mane is arranged in a massive thick braids, combed to the back of the head, bound by an inter-connected diadem crown, flanked by pointed earlobes. He would have normally been sculpted wearing a decorative collar around his neck, rendering his obedience to the religious institution it once guarded.
