    Title:
Antique Khmer Sandstone Figure of a Male Deity, Fragment.  Angkor Transitional Period 'Kulen' Style. Cambodia 9th–14th C.
    Description:
A superb 9th to 14th century hand-carved Khmer Sandstone Multi-Armed Male Deity Figure, fragment, probably that of 'Vishnu', stylistically and iconographically executed in traditional 'Kulen' style, from Khmer mythology. The figure is presented in its unrepaired condition as found, originally modelled from a solid block of stone. As with images from this period, the ornamentation reflects a perfect mastery of sculpting and fluidity, appearing more formalized than previous Angkor periods. Facial features would have been square, and the weight balanced on the left leg. The fragment was discovered in a rice field being cultivated by Village Farmers in northern Cambodia. The carving measures 22.45 inches (57.0cm) in height without the stand.
The fragment is masterfully modelled in realistic human form, standing in 'Samabhanga' in a strong frontal pose with both arms and legs broken, wearing a short stylized sampot worn high on the hips and hung low at the waist, with the navel visible, secured by a plain belt. Typical of Kulen style male figures, his garment is ornamented with a pleated central panel terminating in a fish-tail design at the front and a butterfly knot at the back.
    XXX
Originally hand chiseled from a brownish sandstone, the fragment is an exquisite examples, unaltered, as found, revealing a well weathered and worn surface, with a naturally aged patina of molted variations of hues and colour throughout. The fragment is in excellent condition, with the exception of minor surface abrasions. Severed arms and limbs are typically found in images of this type, having multiple breaks from the burial environment in which they were unearthed, which does not detract from the beauty of the piece in anyway, as displayed. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item.
