Title:
Khmer Bronze Statue of a Female Celestial Maiden 'Nang Apsara'. Cambodia. Circa: Mid 1800's.
Description:
An exquiste Bronze statue of a young Celestial Maiden 'Apsara', the female spirit of the clouds and water, a divine courtesan in the courts of Angkorian Monarchs. As an important motif in Khmer mythology, she was sent to earth by the god Indra to seduce demons and ascetics. The image is constructed of 90% Copper and 10% Tin, quite heavy, poured partially solid with a sandy-clay core. The statue measures 11.25 inches (28.58cm) in height.
The goddess stands poise as a naked figure of sensuous attitude, appearing promiscuous, while expressly displaying charm and grace with a well defined figure of harmonious proportion, a naked upper body partially covered by a jeweled necklace, and hips covered with a long stylized sampot worn low at the waist and embellished with a large rosette at the front, draped with a central panel. She is presented standing on a small plinth, while holding attributes in both hands - long stem lotus buds. Her face appears youthful, characterized by a seductive expression, with incised narrow almond-shaped eyes, ridged eyebrows connect above a prominent nose, nicely detailed wide lips bearing an insipid smile, and elongated earlobes accented by Angkorian style earring pendants frame her face. Her hair is arranged in finely braided strands woven into two parts, forming a stylized headdress rising to a five-point floral finial. She is further adorned with lovely jeweled necklaces draped with a hanging pendant, bracelets on her arms and ankelets on her legs.
XXX
The female figure has a smooth naturally aged dark brown patina lightly peppered in mottled variations of green malachite, shows even wear on the entire piece, with weathering consistent with age. This skillfully executed image of a Cambodia Devi, is a superb example of the Khmer culture and its dynamic artistry. Its creator has modeled a gracious interpretation of the divine iconic goddess in human form, with lively imagination and conviction.
