Up for sale another fantastic Garuda from our extensive Balinese art collection. This is a huge Museum quality rendition of Vishnu riding Garuda, this devotional temple carving dates to the early 20
th
century. It is painted with enamels and has an excellent patina. The condition is truly remarkable for it’s age, one small loss on the upper left wing tip and a check in the wood at the base. All of the features and embellishments are in excellent condition no losses. Not surprising because it is a hardwood carving. Vishnu is the Hindu deity that is the protector and the preserver God of the trinity, his vehicle is Garuda who is powerful in his own right. Garuda also uses his powers for good as a protector and a rescuer. Gaurda helps to dissolve negative energies and also guards the home and instills his great power to those he protects. This Balinese carving has great detail, all their royal finery, the painting is classic-the tartan garment for Garuda the face of Vishnu is perfect, all the extra touches are there. Vishnu is giving the warning mudra with his left hand and he holds the elixir in his right hand; Garuda with massive talons gripping the base covered with the clouds and swirls in great relief. This is a very birdlike rendition of Garuda his beak fierce and menacing his wings are massive as is his tail which is put together with joinery to achieve its size. This is a devotional figure that would make the centerpiece of any collection. The size alone makes this statue impressive; it had to have come from a large tree, measuring 29” tall – 33” tall with the wings in place almost 2’-0” wide and 1’-0” deep. This statue weighs 9 pounds -So the wood itself is impressive we collected this over 14 years ago and have quite a number of early Balinese carvings of all types and styles.
