Title:
Rare Southeast Asia Mon Davaravati Enthroned Buddha Figure, Seated 'European Fashion'. Sandstone, Dvaravati Period. 11/12th C.
Overview:
x
Sacred 'Mon Dvaravati' Buddha, stylistically and iconographically executed in traditional Mon style, bearing Indian influence; portrayed seated in 'European Fashion' on a royal plinth, with both hands in mudra. The figure was recovered from an old temple in the historical Nakhon Pathom province, one of the oldest districts in north central Thailand, a district occupied by Mon people and subsequently their art and culture was influential throughout Southeast Asia from the 7th to12th century, a time commonly called the Dvavarati period in Thai art history.
Description:
x
In the art of Dvaravati , the Buddha sitting in the European fashion is a rare iconographic style depicted in the so-called pendant-legged style and often labeled 'Pralambapadasana' in sanskit. The Buddha seated with two legs hanging down are believed to represent either the historical Buddha Sakyamuni or the future Buddha Maitreya. This form is not often seen in images of the Buddha.
Image Details:

This unusual Mon Dvaravati image is seated on a throne in 'European' fashion with both hands resting on his knees (carved in the round), somewhat symmertrical in its profile, modeled wearing a smooth clinging diaphanous garment worn in the 'Open Mode', covering the left shoulder only, which includes an undergarment draped lower than the rounded hem of the outter loin cloth. His contoured face is highly detailed in a serene contemplative expression, with open eyes, ridged eyebrows connect above a prominent nose, wide full-lipped mouth, and elongated earlobes. The head is covered by snail-shell hair curls, whorled, surmounted by a domed ushnisha. The featureless reverse skillfully reflects the un-interrupted emphasized Dvaravati style. The throne itself is intricately carved in relief, designed in a floral motif with bands of trapped rosettes, flanking both sides of the throne beneath the buddha are a pair of very regal Eld's Deer, fashioned seated gracefully while glancing over their back. Buddhas bare feet rest firmly on a half circle of double lotus flowers, bearing a pair of intricately carved dragons below.
XXX
Mon Dvaravati - A distinct and highly sophisticated culture of southeast Asia who ruled in the central Thai city of Nakhon Pathom, and were characterized as people who spoke the Mon language. The Dvaravati school of art emerged during the seventh and eighth centuries, an innnovative art style that separate their artistic form from Pala( Indian) influence, an individual style distinguishable by the facial features, especially the eyes, and by the fluidness of their images carved in the round. By the tenth century, the disparate Mon-Dvaravati traditions began to come under the influence of the Khmers and central Thailand was ultimately invaded by the Khmer King Suryavarman II, in the first half of the twelfth century.
