    Description

This is a very fine and interesting image of the Lord Buddha, finely modeled and cast in bronze in the 1800s in Tibet. He is 10 inches tall, has a very sculptural feeling about him and a terrific glowing patina. Sakyamuni is one of the titles given to Buddha; deriving from the place, where he was born, Sakya. In Sanskrit, it literally means the hermit of the Sakya tribe. He is seated in padmasana, the asana, or position usually reserved for images of him after his enlightenment. He holds both hands in the Vitarka mudra, the mudra, or gesture of teaching, by forming a circle with his thumb and middle finger. BUDDHA:
    Antique Tibetan Sakyamuni
    Vitarka Mudra,Teaching
    Gilded Bronze 1800s, 15"Tall
This is a very fine and interesting image of the Lord Buddha, beautifully modeled, cast in bronze and gilded in the 1800s in Tibet. He is 15 1/2 inches tall, has a very sculptural feeling about him and a terrific glowing patina.
Below is a photo of him with a standard, 1 1/2 inch tall, shot glass to give some idea of his proportions:
Sakyamuni is one of the titles given to Buddha; deriving from the place, where he was born, Sakya. In Sanskrit, it literally means the hermit of the Sakya tribe.
Our Buddha sits on a beaded moon disk, supported by a waisted and footed lotus petal support. w
    He is seated in
    padmasana
, or the full lotus position, the
    asana,
usually reserved for images of him after his enlightenment.
He holds both of his hands in elegant variations of the Vitarka mudra, the mudra, or gesture of teaching
    This
    mudra
evokes the energy of teaching and intellectual
    discussion
; the transmission of a particular teaching with no words and the circle formed by the thumb and finger creates a constant flow of energy/information.
    It also allows for a
transmission of knowledge in a protected way, without being impeded by fear.
He holds his right hand with his palm out, his left hand has the palm facing upward.
Below is a close up of his hands:
    He has an
    urna
, the round shape on his forehead, which is symbolic of a kind of third eye with which he is able to see past the world of suffering,
    samsar
a, to the world of enlightenment. And he has the three rings at his neck which mark him as a
    mahapursa
, or individual of deep spiritual wisdom.
Remarkable is the extreme elegance of the modeling of the whole figure, but especially of his arms and hands. His fingers seem to be energized by his wisdom and his desire to transmit it to us.
They are modeled with the best possible artistry.
The lotus petal support, the scarf at his shoulder, some of the hems of his garment and the small knob on the top of his head were gilded. Naturally, some of this gold has worn away making for a complex and beautiful patina.
The figure is cast in what is sometimes called "white bronze", which is an alloy of copper, tin and zinc. It has been used down through the centuries and in different cultures to cast images. It is extremely resistant to tarnish and corrosion.
The ungilded parts of this figure have acquired a delicate, warm patina.
This figure is 15 1/2 inches tall and has no serious damage. The bottom edge is a bit rough, as expected. The bottom is open and the tempered core of sand and clay has long ago fallen away.
His face has the usual Tibetan sweetness with his downcast eyes  and gentle smile, but there is more here than the usual otherworldly composure and serenity. His compassionate expression seems to invite communion with him.
The photos give a very good idea of the elegance and beauty of this fine example of Tibetan Sacred art.
If you should have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to contact me.
    And thanks for looking.
    Provenance:
This figure comes from the estate of a gentleman who was employed by the State Department of the United States and was posted to Southeast Asia. I understand that he acquired it in the middle years of the last century in Bangkok.
If you should have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. And thanks for looking
    .
Due to the limitations of photography and the inevitable differences in monitor settings, the color of the pictures on your monitor may be slightly different from the Buddha himself, but I did my best to capture him as he is
    . A
nd, at least on my monitor, the color is a very good match.
    A MESSAGE TO MY CLIENTS
I have been diagnosed with indolent b-cell Lymphoma, Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
and a couple of other things
which is not good, but it could be worse.
The lymphoma which had been napping for a while on my spine has begun to migrate to other lymph nodes around my body and I fear it has awakened from its slumber.
I mention this just to beg a little leeway in the shipping department.
But I will continue to deaccession items from my collections as much as possible. I have been a little sidetracked recently with this diagnosis, and subsequently required obedience to medical professionals.
I am also still disabled with a  right arm and hand, formerly completely paralyzed, now just extremely disobedient and weak. They will not do what I desire them to do with the speed and accuracy I require.
This is slowing me down quite a bit, especially the packing up.
I do manage to get most items off in the four day handling time.
When I get one-handed packing down perfectly, I shall add it to my resume.
