    Huge 18th C. Maori Stone Fern Root Pounder, New Zealand
    Origin: Eastern Polynesia, New Zealand Maori people. Provenance: Ex. Mark Blackburn (Mauna Kea Gallery HI)
    Period: 17th-18th century
    Materials: Basalt, Volcanic stone
    Description: A large "tuki-muka" Stone mallet used for pounding fern roots. It weighs 6 lbs! Used for many generations. In good condition with a few natural voids. For a similar example, see Edge Partington, Ethnographical Album of Pacific Islands, series II page 232 no. 4.
