Description
100% authentic bronze Vishnu Statue from the time of Angkor Wat, 12th century A.D.The Vishnu statue was part of greater Hindu culture (Brahman Sect, Vishnu Sect, Shiva Sect, Kanesh, Uma Devi, etc.) in ancient Khmer Empire (today's Northeast Thailand and Cambodia) from 7th century to 12th century, before getting succeeded by Buddhism in the 13th century. The crown ornament and the wardrobe of this statue represents the characteristic of late Angkor Wat Period in 12th century A.D.
For the most part of Ancient Khmer Empire, "God King" or Deva-Raja was the key principle where the King was believed to be avatar of God and blessed by God to rule all. The rulers as well as nobles would
commission the artisans to make the small bronze statue like this item, placing it in the temple, to worship the Vishnu, the god of protection.
Accordingly to Hinduism, Brahman is god of creation, Vishnu (also known as Narai and Rama) is god of protection, and Shiva is god of destruction. Vishnu is depicted as four armed god that will reborn on earth (Avatar) whenever the mortal faces crisis from evil forces and need Vishnu's help to suppress the evil force. Nonetheless, throughout the history of Ancient Khmer, Kings of Khmer shifted the belief from time to time, from Vishnu to Shiva, from Shiva to Vishnu, from Vishnu to Buddha, from Buddha to Vishnu, etc. Each shift often happened after coupe of power in the royal family or after new royal linage taking the throne. In each change, old statues would be put away buried in the ground and new statues would be commissioned, thus leaving behind valuable artifacts to today. The legacy of the great Ancient Khmer Empire ended around 14th century when new dynasty (from slave rebellion) took over the kingdom and changed to Theravada Buddhism as well as when its neighboring the city of Ayutthaya (today's Thailand) became stronger, started to invade, and from time to time turned Cambodia into its tribute state.
The item has been professional cleaned to remove dirt (please see picture that compares before and after.
