    Description

Antique Sewing Box. Victorian ‘necessaire’ box for ladies’ sewing items, trinkets and toiletries. The top has two pieces of brass inlay missing. And one piece of brass is lifted on the end as shown in photo. The simple, plain exterior of this lacquered wooden box with brass inlay strips belies the bright interior with salmon pink ruffled silk trim. Coils of pink and gold braid adorn the mirror which is topped by a lozenge-shaped piece of dark pink velvet encircled in gold fabric braid. The central container includes a thimble, a large needle, an awl, a spool of pink thread by the Hemingway Company, and a needle case (cover of needle case is missing). There is a loop for another sewing tool but it’s missing. This lifts up to reveal a space for storing other tools or treasures. Flanked by two stoppered bisque/porcelain scent bottles decorated with what looks like forgot-me-nots. No markings on the bottom of the bottles. The box has a lock but no key. This lovely example of a sewing box measures 9 and 3/4” wide, almost 4”high; 6 and 3/4” front to back. The box has a crack on the top which can be seen in photo. Please email with any questions
