Auctions is pleased to offer an authentic antique carved and painted wood Niche Buddha from Burma (Myanmar). The classical Burmese and Thai buddha is distinguished from other types found in Southeast Asia by its slender build, supple limbs, flowing curved outline, and distinguishing features – a decidedly oval head, a fine thin-lipped mouth, a long slightly curved nose, and eyebrows that form a distinctive sweeping curve above almond shaped eyes.
All these features make the face seem longer, an effect amplified further by the high crowning of the ushnisha (hair knot) and long earlobes. On the smooth planes of the body the few seams of the robe, which are devoid of any plasticity, appear as clearly defined lines and blend into the general rhythm of the figure.
Thus, in this type of Buddha, there is a melodious play of forms not found in other depictions, resulting in a style of carving which evokes a sense of tranquility and majesty regardless of size. This piece was created in the 19th century for placement in a Buddhist temple.
The underlying purpose behind its creation was to grant a wish (or create a state of fulfillment) in the life of the practitioner.
Consequently, there is one school of thought, which identifies these sculptures as Avalokitesvara, the “compassionate one,” and the most venerated Buddhist deity next to Buddha himself.
It was presented as an offering and placed in a temple niche, hence the name Niche Buddha.
The sculpture measures 3 inches wide by 2 inches deep by 6 inches in height (7.62 cm by 5.08 cm by 15.2 cm). It shows wear consistent with dating to the late 19th century, and is in very good condition. This piece is evocative of all that Buddhist philosophy has to offer, and would also be a welcome addition to a formal meditation room, collection of Asian antiques, Buddhas, Buddhist objects or statuary related to Buddhism or Buddhist philosophy.
