This one is hard to part with! It is SO rare to find a French sewing box with the interior still intact!!I'm actually waffling as to whether this is Thuya, or burr holly as they both look so similar, but knowing how much the French loved to use Thuya in their boxes, I imagine that's what this is.
This amazing sewing box is circa about 1870. It's beautifully cross-banded with kingwood, and inlaid at the center with brass and kingwood. The stunning purple interior is all original. There is some cracking to the mirror at the back, along the bottom edge of the silk border, but thankfully, some dummy didn't come along and rip it out. :) The tools pad still retains a lot of tools, many of which are probably replacements, but some seem original to the piece. There are two hand painted crystal perfume bottles contained within, and the best part of this box (in my opinion) is that it also retains some remnants of previous owners. There is a beautiful hand made and embroidered pin cushion/needle book. There is a small round keepsake that contains a portrait of a loved one, a beautiful stick pin with a blue cameo at the top, some old packets of needles and other various items as shown in the photos. Best of all, it has a working lock and key. The box measures 10.75" wide by 8.25" deep by 4.5" high. It's a great size!
An absolutely gorgeous and RARE box to find, and we're offering it here at an excellent price. Please view all the photos, they are large and clear, and
please ask all questions before bidding.
