    Description

This is the most remarkable Victorian
    mâché
and lacquer sewing box we've ever had the pleasure of owning.
This amazing sewing box is circa about 1870 and it's in amazing condition.  No chips, no evidence of restoration, all this being practically unheard of for a 150 year old
    mâché
and lacquer box.  They're almost always damaged, and they're very difficult to restore nicely.  This on is as pristine as we've ever seen.
The inside is fully fitted and contains it's original thread reels, waxer, tape measure and emery.  I am not sure if the measure is missing it's tape entirely, or if it's just wound all the way into the center because it's end came off.  I don't want to force the bottom off to check, so I will leave that to the new owner.
The box's tool pad was missing when we purchased this, so I have made an accurate replacement for it with velvet and silk.  It's ready for you to add your own set of mother of pearl tools.  I made sure that the most common ones such as crochet hook, stiletto and scissors, etc., will fit nicely.  There is a slight imprint in the velvet on one end from a tool I had in their briefly after fitting.  It will likely steam out if it bothers you, but if you add your own tools, they're going to imprint anyway, so I doubt it's worth bothering over.  I have also replaced the tray loops with some green silk satin ribbon as they were also missing.
The box measures 9" x 12" across the lid, and about 10.5" x 13.5" across the feet, which extend out beyond the lid.  It is in excellent antique condition.  It has the usual slight cracking to the lacquer, and a few tiny age related marks here and there, but nothing unexpected for a 150 year old box.
An absolutely gorgeous box to find, and we're offering it here at an excellent price.  Please view all the photos, they are large and clear, and
please ask all questions before bidding.
