213 Antique English sterling silver gilt travelling communion set bearing the hallmarks for Birmingham 1861 and the makers mark of John Hardman and Company , for whom Augustus Pugin designed until his death in 1852 . The communion set is the compact type , breaking down into a navette shaped box , the two part chalice and cover fitting into the lower part . On offer is this antique English sterling silver gilt / gold washed  travelling communion set  bearing the hallmarks  for Birmingham 1861 and the makers mark of  John Hardman and Company . Each piece has hallmarks , all or partial , as demanded by English law.   Almost certainly based on a design by Augustus Pugin , who designed for Hardman until his death in 1852 .  The length is 4.4"  and the maximum width is 2.25". The  weight is 160 grams , 5.1 troy ounces .
I have owned many of these travelling communion sets in my time , but not one comes anywhere near the excellence of this one. It is a thing of great beauty and worthy of a place in a museum.
The whole breaks down into a navette shaped box . The chalice and cover fit snugly into the box. The rectangular stem end slots into one end of the box , the crucifix finial rests  gently on a shelf at the other end.  This leaves room for the holy wafers to rest alongside the chalice. The wine is stored inside the chalice . To set up for use the chalice slots into the lower side of the box in the rectangular orifice in the middle.
The decoration is so typical of Pugin , the workmanship in interpreting this design is of the highest order , absolutely divine.
The running inscription  reads : ADOREMUS IN AETERNUM SANCTISSIMUM SACRAMENTUM , which translates as : LET US ADORE FOR EVER THE MOST HOLY SACRAMENT.

The whole is in EXCELLENT CONDITION and is beautifully polished ready to go on display.

I use the words " REASONABLE CONDITION " to indicate that there are blemishes and dings ,dents, creases , scratches , ripples etc . Under this condition category I will always qualify such defects , but please ask if you want any clarification of damages to any given piece.
