You can read A Short History of the Coney Island Jockey Club below our description, at the bottom of this page.
Condition: All pages have some oxidation, toning, soiling, and wear from age and handling, some foxing, rips, tears, and creases. There is rust at the staple,
along with edge and corner wear from use and age. For 115 yrs. old it is in good used condition.
Except for the last race, each race in this program includes
historic pencil notes, attesting to its authenticity. The pencil notes and marks also give insight into magnificent horse racing history which would not otherwise be known, and do not detract from the program’s value.
Of course, the watermarks do not appear on the original program.
This is a fabulous chronicle of the Coney Island Jockey Club, Sheepshead Bay Race Track, Long Island, New York, and American Thoroughbred Horse Racing History.
**See the photos for details. The photos show the spine of each page much better than scans. We did not want to keep bending the spines, so we did not flatten the program completely to scan pages. Old paper can be fragile and we handle it carefully.
We are selling this program as is; restoration and conservation are up to the new owner.
Would make a nice addition to any horse racing collection, an excellent item for the New York thoroughbred horse racing track / club memorabilia collector, or an outstanding gift for the horse racing history enthusiast.

A Short History of the Coney Island Jockey Club
The Racetrack was built by a group of prominent businessmen from the New York City area who formed the Coney Island Jockey Club in 1879.
On 19 June 1880 the track hosted its first day of thoroughbred racing. In its first year of operations, the new Sheepshead Bay track hosted a 1½ mile match race between two of the top horses racing at the time in America: The Dwyer Brothers' Luke Blackburn was ridden by Jim McLaughlin, and Pierre Lorillard's Uncas was ridden by Tom Costello.
Principal backers of the Sheepshead Bay Race Track were August Belmont Jr., Leonard Jerome, James G. K. Lawrence, Pierre Lorillard IV, A. Wright Sanford, William R. Travers, and William Kissam Vanderbilt.
The new Sheepshead Bay Race Track's premier event was the Suburban Handicap, first run June 10, 1884, and conceived by James G. K. Lawrence, who became the track's president. Four years later Lawrence would also create the Futurity Stakes, first run on Labor Day in 1888. At the time the Futurity was the richest race ever run in the United States. Today, both the Suburban and the Futurity are ongoing Graded stakes races held at the Belmont Park racetrack in Elmont, Long Island. The Lawrence Realization Stakes was named for James G. K. Lawrence.
First turf course in the United States: On June 10, 1886 the Coney Island Jockey Club opened the first turf race-course in the United States. Sheepshead Bay had both a dirt and a turf course. The Club replaced the Sheepshead Bay steeplechase course with a one mile turf course, built inside the existing main dirt track. The Green Grass Stakes was the first race on turf and was run as part of the June 10 opening day program.
